Climate change increases extreme weather events resulting in wildfires, floods, and storms. These disasters are devastating communities, causing loss of life, property damage, and displacement. Disaster readiness is crucial for mitigating these impacts and ensuring our safety.
It is time to recognize that our current practices are not sustainable with climate change impacting us now. By signing the pledge, you can join the movement towards building a resilient and prepared Canada.
Dear Civil Protection Youth Canada,
I pledge to do my part in raising awareness for the need to adapt now to the increase of disaster impact due to climate change, and to get ready for the challenges ahead of us.
Pro-active community building around hazard awareness and response is an essential part of preparedness. Harnessing social capital, coordinated teamwork, and creating sustainable local capacity for disaster readiness is no longer a choice.
I acknowledge that systematically training citizens with the hands-on, technical skills needed to safely act in a hazardous environment, rescue people, protect homes, or repair damaged infrastructure leads to closing a serious gap in our outdated disaster response system.
I will urge our government to continue efforts to mitigate climate change and implement adaptation measures, including strengthening our disaster resilience by empowering citizens to stand on guard for Canada together.
Youth are classified as part of the most vulnerable and often identified as the most impacted when disaster strikes. It is their right to be empowered to withstand negative impact by including them into our joint efforts and equipping them to understand hazards, risks, and how to act to remain in control.
I support and share CPYC’s passion for disaster readiness, applaud youth leadership in this important cause, and will encourage my peers and loved ones to get involved.
Sincerely,
